Rudy Choy, center, enjoys brunch on the Terrace after setting Transpacific catamaran record. At left is crewman John Conser and at right, Rae Tang. Rudy's 62-foot Aikane-X5 catamaran set the record when it completed the 2,225-mile run from California to Hawaii in six days, 22 hours, 41 minutes and 12 seconds. This was his fifth try for the record. He'd been trying to bring the record to Hawaii for 32 years. He says he's now retired from racing.
1989 Hawaii Top Athletes
Four Outrigger members were among a group honored by Governor John Waihee for contributions to Hawaii through their athletic achievements. They were Ruben Chappins, triathlete; Tommy Holmes, canoe champion, and Heath Hemmings, surfer. Back: writer Bunky Bautis, Buffalo Keaulana, surfer; Rick Grigg, surfer; Margo Oberg, surfer; Marshall Rosa, kayak champion; George Downing, surfer; and Peter Cole, surfer. Holmes, Hemmings, Rosa and Grigg are OCC members. Downing is a former Club coach.
