What started as a dream of Outrigger's Bob Fischer became reality in January 1991 when State and Oahu Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association officials broke ground for a new $2.4 million competition center at Keehi Lagoon. The State is constructing the site which will include dredging of the lagoon for a total of 12 lanes, each 80-feet wide and a half-mile long, a Judge's Pavilion, restrooms, outdoor showers, jogging and bicycle paths, access roads, two new parking areas with space for 200 cars, landscaping and shade trees. Two long earth grassy mounds will also be built where spectators can sit and watch the races. No canoe races will be held at Keehi Lagoon in 1991 while the construction is on-going.
