The opening ceremony commemorated the 50th year of organized outrigger canoe racing in Hawaii and honored the Year of the Canoe. The championships were once known as the Julian Yates Territorial Championships and held in Hilo. This year the championships were held at Keehi Lagoon.
2000 HCRA State Championships
Outrigger's Keanuenue Rochlen was reocgnized as one of the two longest paddling paddlers in HCRA history. Keanue first paddled in the state championships in 1952, winning the Senior 6. She has won many golds in the years since, including steering the OCC Masters 53 to victory this year. She is the oldest registered HCRA paddler at 71.
