The groin originally built in 1968 between the Elks Club and the Outrigger Canoe Club to preserve the Club's sandy beach, was removed on April 24, 2002. Although the Club had a permit from the Corps of Engineers to install the groin, it unknowingly lacked a permit from the State Department of Land and Natural Resources. The Club opted to remove the groin. American Marine floated a barge at high tide into the waters off the Club and used a crane mounted on the barge to remove the pilings which had been left over by a building project down the coast.
