Paddlers rig the Outriggerʻs first koa canoe the Hanakeoki, which is now owned by Makaha Canoe Club. They allowed it to be showcased at the Macfarlane Regatta during Outriggerʻs Centennial year along with Outriggerʻs three other koa canoes, the Leilani, the Kakina and the Kaoloa.

The oldest canoe, the Hanakeoki, was Outrigger's first koa racing canoe. Its first known race was in 1906. Outrigger acquired her in 1908. The Hanakeoki was sold to Makaha Canoe Club in 1972. The Hanakeoki was raced in the first Macfarlane Regatta in 1943 by an Outrigger girl's crew.

All four of the Outrigger Canoe Club's koa racing canoes sit on Waikiki Beach during the Club's 100th Anniversary celebration. The Hanakeoki was the Club's first koa, acquired in 1908. The Leilani and Kakina were purchased in 1936 and the Kaoloa was built for the Club in 1986. Koa canoes are no longer raced in the Macfarlane Regatta due to the possibility of damage to the precious canoes from the surf. Koa trees for building canoes is hard to find.

A rare sight on Waikiki Beach: four koa racing canoes. The Hanakeoki was the Outrigger Canoe Club's first racing canoe obtained in 1908 and sold to Makaha Canoe Club in 1972. The Leilani and Kakina came to the Club in 1936, and the Kaoloa was built by Joe Quigg in 1986. The koa canoes are so old and rare that canoe clubs race in fiberglass canoes today in Waikiki to prevent damage from waves. They are raced during the OHCRA and HCRA regatta flat water races and some clubs race them in distance races.

Outrigger Canoe Club President Tom McTigue welcomed paddlers to the 66th Annual Macfarlane Regatta, saying. "It is with great enthusiasm that we celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the Outrigger Canoe Club and we return to Waikiki, the site of our original Club, to relish in 100 years of OCC history. On behalf of the Outrigger we welcome you to one of our beloved annual events--the 66th Annual Walter J. Macfarlane Regatta. The founding members of the Outrigger devoted themselves to the perpetuation of the sports of Old Hawaii. Together we strive to carry on these sports and traditions into the next 100 years of Club history. We hope your experiences in and out of the canoe today will be fun, safe and memorable. Enjoy the camaraderie that this unique event brings to the sport of canoe paddling. Best of luck to you all."

Regattas of the 1930s opened with a swim, so Outrigger invited every club to participate in an opening race with a male and female swimmer in memory of Duke Kahanamoku, Outrigger's first Olympian. Siana Hunt gives instructions to the swimmers: a beach start, turning on the quarter mile buoy, then returning to the beach.

Open steersmen make sure that all canoes are safe in the ocean during the Macfarlane Regatta. To honor these experienced watermen, the Outrigger paid tribute to the winningest of these steersmen by presenting wood paddles honoring their expertise. Anthony Hunt presents a paddle to Walter Guild of the Outrigger for winning 41 races in the Macfarlane over the years.
