Catching waves at Waikiki Beach makes the race more fun for crews at the regatta. The Macfarlane is the only wave race on the Oahu Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association regatta schedule. Waves this year were 3-4 feet, although there were some that rolled in at 7 feet. Open steersmen are used to make sure that crews are safe and have experienced watermen and women guiding them.

Oldtimers Kimo Austin and Fred Hemmings Jr. watch the races. They both had children and grandchildren competing. Hemmings was one of the top wave steersmen in the state and steered many winning crews in past Macfarlanes. Kimo's son Jimmy Austin broke Fred's record by steering eight winning crews during the regatta. Fred's record was seven.
